Perry is a Chicago native who was born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. But her parents would not let her perform until she turned an adult, for fear of the negative effects that stress could have on their daughter. Perry said she felt timid to perform during high school, but started doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. The feeling of homelessness, however, caused her to move to California to return, where she started working on stage. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was a regular character in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. She was also cast in her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The character was assigned to her through audition, regardless of the fact that she is a relative with the character.
